Online blogging & networking explained
From MySpace to Facebook, Blogspot.com to the infamous Rotten Tomatoes, internet message boards have taken the need for phone and face-to-face meetings out of communication. Simply put, message boards have allowed prolonged conversation to go global in a matter of seconds.
With this new expansive audience, comes the ever-present idea of marketing to the greatest amount of users and consumers possible. Constantly, marketing professionals are looking for ways to reach their cliental in a personal yet productive manner, and what better way than to advertise in a space where people are compelled to share information about their wants and needs? Message boards have created new territory for companies to capitalize on.
While other forms of internet marketing have claimed the grounds of banner advertisements, website promotion, search engine optimization, email marketing and affiliate marketing, there is even more to effective internet marketing than those models. Because of their popularity and ease of access, message boards are some of the simplest and least expensive internet marketing options available today. This article will examine how progressive business owners can use internet message boards to tap into an area already important to the internet-savvy individuals. Further, it will explain how message boards can be misused and rendered ineffective as well.
Most message boards are focused on a niche and encourage those who share an interest in this particular subject to get together to discuss relevant issues, ask questions, provide advice and even just socialize. Because message boards can focus on any subject imaginable, any business owner would be wise to examine this tool’s usefulness within the world-wide market. Much less invasive than the phone survey or automated message, advertising on message boards allows consumers to get a glimpse of products they may not have been exposed to, while doing something they enjoy in the privacy of their own homes. The user then has the ability to distance him or herself at their leisure, and in that pressure-free environment, will be much more likely to truly consider the need or desire for a product.
Because message boards are devoted to topics chosen by the user, topics in which they are already interested, a business owner who actively participates in this message board can take the opportunity to post a link to his website when it is relevant and offers something of value to the user. Businesses who post on message boards could not only take advantage of the opportunity to present their product, but to perfect their product. Message boards solicit a non-threatening environment where people can say anonymously say whatever they want. These open opinions can be invaluable to any company who is willing to listen.
Of course, there are restrictions to message boards, and following the rules associated with the message boards is a must for any business wishing to promote an image of competence and integrity. Many message boards have clear regulations regarding the posting of links, and failure to abide by these restrictions may result in a user being banned from the message board. For this reason it is important for people who are interested in using message boards for promotion of their business to carefully read posted user agreements, to ensure they are not violating any of the rules. More important than gaining wide exposure is gaining a favorable opinion from the customer, and very few people want spam to become the main content of their favorite message board. Common sense should prevail when promoting a business on a message board. Further, just because a message board’s rules do not restrict posting links, does not mean businesses should spam the board with links or pop-up advertisements.
Using message boards to promote any business can be highly effective, but only if courtesy is extended to other message board users. If people feel as though the safety of their anonymous posting environment is threatened, they are prone to simply finding a different, untainted message board to use. Content relevance to the customer is key, and to be taken seriously a company must act professionally and responsibly. Message board participants will remember user names, an offending company’s link, and will not be likely to take you seriously if you have previously made posts which were mean spirited, irrelevant, or inaccurate.
